I had a fun time making my ramen sample bowl with Ryou, who was fun, informative and supportive of my efforts. I was the only adult making this (I think most people come in groups) but I did see a few families and children at other tables making their fake desserts. I received clear directions to the sample shop ahead of my class, and this was incredibly helpful. When I arrived, I was ushered to a table and was given a bin to drop my purse in. This workshop isn't making the food from scratch, but gives a little bit of a taste of what it's like. This is good since the whole process probably takes hours if not days. It is an art form that's been perfected, so there's no way we could master it walking in for an hour. That said, we were given all the elements - from the replica noodles and fish naruto to the green onions. Much of the class is soaking these wax elements in water to soften them and make them malleable for shaping. The main skills I needed was being able to shape most of the elements by hand, cutting plastic green onions and then slow-pouring the gelatin "soy sauce." Ryou could tell I was trying to make it perfect, so on a few occasions he offered to clean the gelatin when it wasn't meeting either of our standards. You get to keep the food sample you made (my ramen bowl got a plastic to-go lid & then placed in a box and paper bag with handles for easy transport. The shop also gives you a bonus food replica charm. This was so fun!
