Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market: Seafood, Japanese Knives, and Shrine
Food Tours
I was a bit apprehensive booking this tour... afterall, with the old fish market demolished and the auction and new fish market at Toyosu, was a tour still needed to navigate this area? However, this tour exceeded all expectations! Our guide, Keiko, highlighted and explained the best of the old outer fish market and weaved in the area's history, Japanese culture, and of course, a variety of the best food the market has to offer. The tour was fantastically paced, and the food offerings were diverse--you won't just be eating raw fish the entire time! You can tell that Keiko has developed a strong relationship with her vendors, and that they're happy to see her stop by--she's cherry picked some of the best and they give their A-game for the tour (each stall has mouth watering food). Some shops have great packaged options to bring home a bit of the taste of Japan for you to savor later or with loved ones back home. I'm a bit of an amateur chef myself and bought quite a few things on this tour, including a knife from the shop Keiko recommended! I had visited Kappabashi the day before to check out my options, and the shop Keiko showed us was comparable or even better value with their knives. Their storied history and ties to the fish market give their products a special sense of history and a great story for you to remember each time you use one of their knives. Exceptional tour--this tour was a highlight for both me and my wife on our 2.5 week vacation in Japan!

We had a great time with Ayumi, starting with a brief tour of the temple and then a walking tour of the market, where we got to visit several food stalls and sample a variety of fresh fish and other delicacies. Ayumi shared her knowledge of local foods and also gave us tips about different restaurants to try. We enjoyed chatting with her at John Lennon’s favorite coffee shop inside the market. We also enjoyed our time with a sushi chef, who showed us his knife skills and how to assemble our own fish and rice bowl. .It was great to have an expert guide us around the crowded market and make the experience so educational as well as fun.
