This was one of the coolest experiences I have ever had! I happened to meet the owner on Threads while posting about Japan, and learned she had a Ramen experience that took place at both her brother’s 3rd generation ramen factory and her house for dinner. We got to try their grandpa’s original ramen after flattening it and cutting it ourselves, as well as try salad, gyoza, and pork ramen soup that were all their mother’s and grand mother’s recipes. She even took care to make sure my mom’s shellfish allergy wasn’t an issue! We spent 5 hours with this kind family, had amazing and deep conversations about cultural similarities and differences, and even got to meet the family’s children, neighbor, and dogs! It was such a soulful experience and I cannot recommend enough. Might be the best experience I’ve ever had in Japan!

The lesson moved at a great pace, which felt really comfortable! And the taste? Absolutely perfect! 👍 I loved how the instruction was tailored to my preferences and how carefully the flavors were checked along the way—it was fantastic! For the mushroom mixed rice, the dashi stock made from dried shiitake mushrooms and kombu was excellent. We cooked it in a pot, so we even got to enjoy the crispy, caramelized rice crust (*okoge*) at the bottom! Turning the used kombu into *furikake* seasoning was a delicious example of eco-friendly cooking! Tomoko-sensei’s homemade pickled *koume* plums paired perfectly with the rice—it was incredibly delicious! Then there was the tofu steak! With that all-purpose sauce, making a steak is a breeze—a truly superb dish! The potato potage was also easy to make and delicious. 😋 Adding a dash of cinnamon to change up the flavor was a brand-new experience for me! I devoured it in no time! Next was the stir-fried eggplant with miso. Mmm, so tasty! The hand-torn shiso leaves added a lovely accent. The lesson was packed with treats—Tomoko-sensei’s homemade salad, plum wine, plum juice, and matcha jelly—leaving me completely satisfied! Above all, it was such a fun time, filled with wonderful hospitality! The food was delicious, of course, but the conversation while cooking was just so much fun. It feels like that positive energy is infused right into the dishes! I’d love to sign up for another class!

What a lovely experience making Udon noodles. Chef Chinki was most welcoming and clearly explained every step. She is very passionate about cooking with the best possible fresh ingredients to accompany the udon noodles. Many of them were new to me. Thank you for sharing your skills.

A definite highlight of our trip to Japan. From the moment we walked in, Midori-san showed us great hospitality by serving us tea and sweets. She is very friendly and lively, and we felt right at home. She asked about our itinerary and gave us detailed recommendations. This was close to the end of our Japan trip, but I'd strongly recommend booking this near the start so you can benefit most from her suggestions! The cooking class was great and Midori-san was very patient and clear in her instructions. We made vegan onigiri, gyoza and ramen. The onigiri was surprisingly simple to make and we also received printouts of the recipe. After only being back in the US for a few days, I have already made onigiri for lunch. The gyoza and ramen were equally delicious. Make sure to come with an empty stomach! After we finished the food, she even walked us to a nearby supermarket so we could pick up the ingredients to make them at home. Overall, Midori-san went above and beyond to make this a great experience for us. There are of course many things to do in Kyoto, but as a tourist it's rare to be able to have an experience like this where you are welcomed inside a local's home. I strongly recommend this class.

It was a truly wonderful afternoon and evening. The tour of the workshop was very interesting. The cooking session with Akiko at the end was the perfect way to wrap things up. We were given a very warm welcome at her home. It was the absolute highlight of our entire vacation.

One of the highlights of our trip. Midori is very well informed and likes to share knowledge about the food and culture. She gives shopping tips not only for food items but also for other hobby-related stuff like knitting or sawing. She even took us to a local supermarket to show what products are available and where to get them. Because Midori prepared the easy stuff in advance the cooking class was able to cover 3 whole recipes with a lot of background info. We should have done the class in the beginning of our trip because of all the good tips. We wish Midori all the best!

We recently did a sushi-making class here as a work team-building activity, and it was such a fantastic experience. The restaurant’s incredible history and traditional atmosphere made the whole event feel really special. The staff were welcoming, patient, and made the class both fun and informative, even for complete beginners. We learned a lot about sushi preparation, ingredients, and technique while also enjoying plenty of laughs as a team. The sushi itself was absolutely delicious and incredibly fresh. It was the perfect balance of hands-on activity, cultural experience, and amazing food. Highly recommend for corporate team events or anyone looking for a unique experience in a beautiful historic setting.
