Muroi
From earth to plate in under half a day — you won’t find fresher vegetables in all of Kyoto!
Restaurant Details
This Kyoto kaiseki restaurant may be situated a little far out from the city center, housed in an old farming village to the north which has since been absorbed as a suburb of the city, but a trip here is well-rewarded with one of the most unique 2021 Michelin-starred kaiseki meals in town.
The area used to host an artist’s community in the Edo period, but now the main draw of the area is the culinary artisanship of Muroi’s chef. Its old farmhouse building dates back to the Meiji era, with a sense of history in its walls, and of drama in the lighting of its tatami mat rooms.
The proprietor collects fresh well water daily to make the most crisp and fresh dashi stock, with which he cooks up an omakase course of top traditional delicacies. The vegetable farm just across the street is where they source their produce from, so you can enjoy the freshness of seasonal veggies which have made their way from earth to plate in just a matter of a few hours.
