Experience Details
Manpukuji Temple in Uji (Kyoto) is opening its doors and granting exclusive access to byFood customers. This experience is available for a limited number of people and for one day only, Saturday 21 October. Guests will gain access to special areas on the Manpukuji Temple grounds and engage in several unique experiences: A unique Fucha Ryori (vegetarian Buddhist cuisine) dining experience, a premium Japanese tea ceremony presented by well-respected merchants, tea ceremony masters, and other leaders in the tea industry. Manpuku-ji Temple–also known as Obaku-san Manpuku-ji–is a Zen Buddhist temple located in the Uji district of Kyoto. It was founded in the early 1660s by Chinese Zen master Yinyuan Longqi (better known by his Japanese name, Ingen). Ingen was a highly respected Zen master who traveled extensively in China before arriving in Japan in 1654. The ruling Tokugawa shogunate invited him to Japan to share his teachings and insights on Zen Buddhism. Emperor Gomizuno-o (a devout supporter of Zen Buddhism) also welcomed Ingen and granted him a plot of land in Uji, where he established Manpuku-ji Temple. One of Ingen's significant contributions was the introduction of Fucha-Ryori (the vegetarian Buddhist cuisine you’ll be dining on during this experience). He believed that nourishing the body with wholesome vegetarian food not only supported the pursuit of enlightenment but also cultivated a deeper connection to nature and all living beings.
