Really enjoyed our session with Rina!! She picked us up from the monorail station, which made it really convenient to get to her place. Moreover she was readily available over email from the day we booked the event. She was warm, personable and communicated well in English with us. She had a carefully selected menu that introduced us to local Okinawan ingredients like goya, mozuku, Okinawan bonito, awamori, beni-imo and other Japanese ingredients such as kombu, bonito, konyaku, Japanese mountain yam, mochi etc. Her professional kitchen in her home gave both a pro- and a home cooking flavor to the whole session. She guided giving us hands-on opportunities with chopping, mixing, frying, ... while we sipped Japanese tea through the evening. The resulting meal, arranged traditionally in the bento boxes, was as delicious as it was beautiful. The star of the evening was the dessert- mochi wrapped in tender ginger leaves (from her garden!) and steamed in a bamboo steamer. Our time (and money!) was very well-spent and I would recommend her highly to anyone interested in an evening of Japanese cooking.

Rina San was very nice and accommodating. She went and got us and took us into her home which was like a professional kitchen. She took her time and explained everything thoroughly in both English and Japanese. They she showed us how to plate a bento in a classy style. If you want to learn how to make some Okinawan food I recommend this class.

Discover the Vegetarian Delights of Okinawa

Okinawa, the southernmost prefecture of Japan, offers a unique culinary experience with its blend of traditional Ryukyu cuisine and modern Japanese influences. This island paradise is famous for its fresh ingredients and diverse flavors, making it an ideal destination for food enthusiasts. For vegetarians, Okinawa is a treasure trove of plant-based options, full of unique and delicious dishes that cater to various tastes and preferences. Whether you are a dedicated vegetarian or a curious foodie looking to try something new, Okinawa's vegetarian food experiences promise an unforgettable journey.

Experience Authentic Okinawan Cuisine

Okinawa's traditional cuisine, known as Ryukyu cuisine, reflects the island's rich history and cultural influences. Many dishes naturally lean towards plant-based ingredients, making it a vegetarian-friendly destination. Key ingredients such as sweet potatoes, goya (bitter melon), and seaweed are staples in Okinawan cooking, along with tofu and a variety of local vegetables. Try dishes like "goya champuru," a stir-fried dish of bitter melon that is often prepared with tofu for a hearty vegetarian meal. Another popular choice is "jimami tofu," a peanut-flavored tofu that is smooth and creamy, offering a unique twist compared to traditional soybean tofu.

Okinawan cuisine also embraces flavors from the land and sea, providing a holistic culinary experience. Seaweed, rich in nutrients and flavor, is a common ingredient in many vegetarian dishes. Try "mozuku," a seaweed salad seasoned with tangy vinegar, or "sea grapes," known locally as "umi budo," which are a type of seaweed with a popping texture that is often enjoyed with soy sauce.

Explore the Vegetarian-Friendly Experiences

Join guided tours and cooking classes in Okinawa to deepen your understanding of the local cuisine and learn how to prepare traditional vegetarian dishes yourself. These experiences not only teach you the intricacies of Okinawan cooking but also allow you to engage with local chefs who are passionate about preserving and promoting their culinary heritage.
