Experience Details

Uji has long been known for its rich history as a tea trading town, particularly high quality green and matcha tea. On this tour, you will gain a deeper understanding of tea, walking Uji riverside visiting tea stores and tasting many varieties of tea such as houjicha (roasted tea), genmaicha (green tea with rice) and matcha (powdered green tea) to name a few!


On this experience, you'll start off with a quick visit a pottery studio that's positioned quaintly riverside. Then step back in time when setting foot into the oldest tea house in Japan, with a history dating back to the 12th century! After you will either visit another tea house in Taiho-an or a tea processor if they're available where you'll find out more about the history of the area and the ancient role tea has in the life here and within Japanese culture. The last stop on the tour is to a tea farmer in Uji where you can walk around the fields that host row upon row of perfectly pruned tea bushes and learn more about how they harvest and how they grow and produce different teas.

  • If you don't choose pick-up at either Kasuga Hotel or Nara Hotel, you can start the experience at Uji Station.
