We had such a great time on this tour and had so much wonderful food. Hannah G. was an excellent guide! We were especially appreciative of her knowledge of vegetarian options. Also, she shared great tips on eating vegetarian as we traveled and even recommended a signature dish for the next prefecture we were headed to. And the tea surprise to finish the tour was such a special experience. Highly recommended.

Quick summary - it’s a wonderful experience and you won’t regret it! 10/10 and S+ tier If you’re a fan of Shizuka’s videos, you’ll definitely love the Harajuku tour that she’s arranged. If you’re not (yet) a fan, this is a tour that you should choose. Either way, you should bring an extra pair of socks because the tour will knock the first pair off. Jk😉 Shizuka’s entertaining, engaging, and energetic personality really stood out as she led my wife and I and another couple through parts of Harajuku along the famous Takeshita street. It’s not just a foodie tour but she gives history and cultural insights about the area and street during the (too short) four-hour tour. We had so much fun as a group eating, drinking, walking, and talking. Shizuka effortlessly led an interactive tour as she guided our group. She made sure that everyone had opportunities to engage in the activities like cooking okonomiyaki and selecting gatchapon, which made the tour much more interesting than just being led around listening to a taped or scripted tour. Shizuka shared her knowledge and experiences in Japan and gave recommendations about other foods, areas, and activities based on people’s interests and questions. We enjoy her videos on YT and her tour definitely did not disappoint. We really enjoyed the experience and would definitely recommend it to everyone. Time really flew because we had so much fun. We will definitely look for more tours with byFood and Shizuka on future trips to Japan.

After watching countless byFood videos on YouTube, we decided to book the tour with Shizuka — and it turned out to be the best decision we could have made. The tour offered the perfect blend of fascinating information about Harajuku, fun activities, and a wonderful variety of delicious foods. Shizuka’s open, cheerful, and irresistibly positive personality made the entire experience unforgettable, and the time just flew by. For anyone who has the chance to join Shizuka on this tour, it’s an absolute must-do — it will definitely be the highlight of your Tokyo trip. Thank you so much for the amazing tour, Shizuka!

I was always interested with doing some sort of tour in Japan but could never figure out which one to go on. The moment I found out Shizuka was hosting the Harajuku tour I immediately knew that if there was any Japan tour for me to go on that this would definitely be the one. That instinct did not steer me wrong because this was absolutely one of the most memorable moments of all my trips to Japan! Shizuka is just as kind, bubbly and endearing in all of the videos she is in, maybe even more so! I have to admit that I was nervous meeting her but her genuine personality makes everyone feel so comfortable to the point where it feels like we’ve known her forever. She is also amazing with children. There were two in our group and she engaged with them in the most cool auntie way! Shizuka really made this tour so much fun and very informative with her knowledge of Japan history. She is just so much fun to be around and If she’s still doing tours by the next time I plan a trip back to Japan you can definitely count me in! I really had thee most amazing time. This will be a memory I will cherish and hold dear in my heart forever. Arigato gozaimashita Shizuka!!

We had an amazing time with Shizuka! Our kids (ages 6 and 9) thought this was one of the best things we did in Japan- they had the opportunity to learn about the Harajuku culture, to try tons of new foods (fun and delicious) and Shizuka kept them engaged and excited for the entire time. I really appreciated her patience and her ability to manage the group and our varying interests. The kids are already asking when we can go back to do another food tour with Shizuka!! Thank you, ByFood and Shizuka for hosting this incredible tour!

Explore Tokyo's Vibrant Vegetarian Street Food Scene

Tokyo, the bustling metropolis of Japan, is a city where traditional flavors meet modern innovation. For vegetarians and food enthusiasts alike, exploring Tokyo's street food scene promises a delightful culinary adventure. With vegetarian options that cater to diverse palates, Tokyo's Japanese street food provides a rich tapestry of flavors and textures that are both unique and satisfying.

Japanese street food might traditionally evoke images of seafood and meat-centric dishes, but vegetarian options are on the rise. Street vendors across Tokyo have embraced this dietary choice, offering an array of mouth-watering vegetarian delights. From skewered veggies to savory crepes filled with fresh, seasonal ingredients, every corner brings a new surprise to taste buds. Whether you're wandering through the bustling markets of Shibuya or the lively alleys of Asakusa, there's something for every vegetarian to savor.

Must-Try Vegetarian Dishes in Tokyo

Among the must-try vegetarian street foods is Okonomiyaki, a savory pancake made with flour, cabbage, and other vegetables, all mixed and grilled to perfection. Unlike its traditional form, these vegetarian versions omit the usual meat toppings, focusing on a rich, umami taste derived from soy sauce, seaweed flakes, and a drizzle of mayonnaise.

Another favorite is Yaki Imo, a simple yet delicious roasted sweet potato. Found mainly in colder months, this warm, starchy treat is both satisfying and wholesome. Vendors typically sell them right from the cart, exuding an irresistible aroma that draws passersby.

Vegetarian Takoyaki, traditionally made with octopus, has its meat-free variant using mushrooms or other fillings. The delightful, crispy outside with a creamy interior makes it a perfect vegetarian snack. In many areas, you’ll find versions with cheese or other plant-based fillings that appeal to every palate.

How to Enjoy Tokyo's Vegetarian Japanese Street Food

Immersing yourself in the street food culture of Tokyo as a vegetarian can be a breeze with a few tips in mind. Language can sometimes be a barrier, but many vendors are used to tourists and welcome pointing to what you’d like to try or using translation apps to help communicate your preferences.

Pay attention to food markets and festivals, where there’s often a plethora of stalls offering unique, vegetarian-friendly street food options. Locations like Nakamise Street and Ameya-Yokocho are known for their vibrant food scenes, perfect spots for exploring and tasting vegetarian delicacies.

Lastly, engage with the locals to discover hidden gems or popular stalls off the beaten path. Tokyo's street food culture is one of sharing and discovery, making it a perfect opportunity to meet new friends and gather food tips. Whether you’re a long-time vegetarian or just curious about a meat-free lifestyle, Tokyo's street food scene is generous, diverse, and ready to offer an unforgettable culinary experience.
