In easy steps which you actively participate in the instructors will guide you through making 4 different kinds of Mochi - from savory to sweet to mochi containing fruit. You will learn all the names and ingredients and make and form the mochi yourself. This is not the "pounded" kind of mochi, but rather the sort you mix up rice powder, sugar and water and microwave - yielding a soft edible treat. We had a blast and quite enjoyed it. We actually did this class and a ByFood Wagashi class in the same day and though the ingredients are similar the techniques learned are quite different. Both were fun and informative. Another win for ByFood and Japanese craftsmanship.

Quick summary - it’s a wonderful experience and you won’t regret it! 10/10 and S+ tier If you’re a fan of Shizuka’s videos, you’ll definitely love the Harajuku tour that she’s arranged. If you’re not (yet) a fan, this is a tour that you should choose. Either way, you should bring an extra pair of socks because the tour will knock the first pair off. Jk😉 Shizuka’s entertaining, engaging, and energetic personality really stood out as she led my wife and I and another couple through parts of Harajuku along the famous Takeshita street. It’s not just a foodie tour but she gives history and cultural insights about the area and street during the (too short) four-hour tour. We had so much fun as a group eating, drinking, walking, and talking. Shizuka effortlessly led an interactive tour as she guided our group. She made sure that everyone had opportunities to engage in the activities like cooking okonomiyaki and selecting gatchapon, which made the tour much more interesting than just being led around listening to a taped or scripted tour. Shizuka shared her knowledge and experiences in Japan and gave recommendations about other foods, areas, and activities based on people’s interests and questions. We enjoy her videos on YT and her tour definitely did not disappoint. We really enjoyed the experience and would definitely recommend it to everyone. Time really flew because we had so much fun. We will definitely look for more tours with byFood and Shizuka on future trips to Japan.
