A classy gastropub in Kagurazaka run by an ex-sumo wrestler, which specializes in sumo cuisine’s chanko nabe hotpot.
Restaurant Details
Koto Kuroshio is the owner of this Kagurazaka restaurant. If that name doesn’t ring any bells, you’re obviously not a sumo fan. Regardless, if you eat here, you may be in for a chance to meet a sumo star in person!
Kuroshio-san is an ex sumo wrestler with a personality as big as his body was in his heyday. You can see images of those days adorning the walls, along with various other paraphernalia related to Japan’s fascinating national sport. A cartoon on the noren curtain shows a rotund little sumo-in-training gleefully carrying a pot of simmering soup.
This pot contains the main gourmet attraction: chanko nabe, a huge portion of protein and vegetables in a flavorful dashi stock broth. This hefty hotpot is used by sumo wrestlers to bulk up their bodies to gargantuan sizes so they can stand their ground in the ring. Chanko Kuroshio's variety is made with white miso for a unique flavor, and uses chicken for the protein source.
The restaurant itself is a sparse but stylish space fully in keeping with the clean and clear aesthetic of Kagurazaka. Grab a seat here to immerse yourself in a classy and refined take on fine sumo dining, with some great all-you-can-drink deals on top.
