Load up on protein like a sumo wrestler with a jam-packed chanko nabe stew at this sumo practice stable turned restaurant.

Restaurant Details

Chanko is a word not familiar to many Japanese food fans, as it historically had quite a niche clientele. That’s because it’s basically a word for sumo wrestler’s cuisine. This restaurant used to be a training stable for top sumo wrestlers, who would wrestle at the nearby sumo stadium. Nowadays, they serve up protein-rich food in sumo-sized portions. Chanko nabe — a type of stew dish associated with sumo wrestlers — is the most famous dish on offer. It consists of huge amounts of protein and vegetables in a hotpot. They also have sushi meals, served for a ridiculously good price at lunchtime. It’s not just the menu and portions that draw from sumo culture — the whole place is dripping in history! In fact, they even kept the practice ring in the middle of the main dining room. Here you can watch performances of sumo themed songs, or traditional instrument and piano recitals, from around 7 in the evening. For a (literal) taste of Japan’s historic sporting culture, book your spot at Kappa Yoshiba today.
