Okama Crater Travel Guide

Okama Crater
The glistening waters of Okama Crater leaves tourists and locals in awe.

Known as one of Japan’s most famous mountains, the Zao Mountain Range between Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures offers many experiences for those who love the outdoors. One of the top attractions many come to see is the Okama Crater due to its stunning water, known as Goshikinuma (the pond of five colors). Depending on the lighting and viewing spot, the color of the water changes, giving the crater a magical feel. Though the crater is not accessible up close, visitors can view the lake at the Mount Zao Rest House or, be adventurous and hike the “Umanose” path that leads to the top of Mount Kumanodake to see the astounding view.

Enjoy other activities in the area such as Mount Kattadake, home of the Kattamine Shrine. Other places in the area include a visitor center and a restaurant. Enjoy and take a rest at the Zao Onsen, accessible via the Zao Ropeway.
