My partner and I had a wonderful experience with Chef Saisho. He is a very kind and gracious host, and our dining experience with him was everything we could have wanted! He proved to be very knowledgeable as he guided us through the market. He asked our opinions on the fresh seafood available and picked up an assortment of ingredients to prepare for our lunch, as well as helped translate questions we had for different vendors. We walked to his restaurant from the market and he began preparing a delicious omakase lunch for us while entertaining our questions and telling us stories. We also had an opportunity to learn from Chef Saisho how to form nigiri sushi and practice ourselves. The food was excellent and our experience with Chef Saisho was a highlight of our recent trip to Japan. Thank you Chef!!

We just had the BEST time at our ramen and gyoza making class!! We are a family of 4 so we had the whole class to ourselves!! Our host was so sweet and spoke perfect English. She picked us up at the meeting place (only one train stop away from the Ikebukuro station) and walked us down the street to the cute Japanese home where the class took place. Our chef was very friendly and knowledgeable. He taught us step by step how to make everything as our host translated. It was very hands-on and easy to follow! The food was delicious and we were given the recipes and instructions so we could make the dishes at home! After we ate, we enjoyed some Japanese sweets and learned how to make matcha tea the traditional way with a bamboo whisk. All in all, this class has been the highlight of our trip to Japan! We had a blast and the food was delicious! Do not hesitate to book this class on your trip to Japan!

Grandma Junko and her assistant, Chikako, were very lovely. Grand Junko was very thorough with her instructions. She brought out different miso paste to try and explained which paste belong to which region in Japan. We learned to make one soup, one rice dish (two ways to make onigiri) and 3 side dishes (gomae, Nagoya miso chicken and tamagoyaki) Even though the kitchen was small, they run a tight ship and were very big on hygiene. Chikako cleans every plate right away and the table is consistently wiped down. After we finished the meal, Grandma Junko taught us the way of having a tea ceremony. I really like the relaxed environment. She taught us how to clean the tools to make tea and the brewing process. We really appreciate their patience and are grateful for them to share the knowledge of Japanese home cooking. Thank you Chikako for taking our pictures. Thank you Grandma Junko for sharing your love of cooking.

Japanese home cooking classes offer you a personalized journey into authentic flavors, traditional techniques, and heartwarming dishes prepared just as they would be in a typical Japanese household. Whether you're a seasoned chef or a cooking novice, these classes provide an excellent opportunity to enhance your culinary skills.

What to Expect in a Japanese Home Cooking Class

When you join a Japanese home cooking class, you can expect to be warmly welcomed into a relaxing and educational environment. These classes often take place in either a professional kitchen setup or a cozy home kitchen, setting the perfect atmosphere for learning. You'll get hands-on experience with traditional tools and utensils such as the **donabe** (clay pot) and the **oshi-bako** (wooden mold used for shaping rice and sushi).

Typical classes will guide you through making popular homestyle dishes such as **miso soup**, **tempura**, **sukiyaki**, and **okonomiyaki**. Beyond just recipes, you'll learn knife techniques, how to correctly balance flavors, and the importance of seasonal ingredients in Japanese cooking. A highlight of these classes is often the emphasis on creating meals that are both nutritious and visually pleasing, adhering to the Japanese principle of "**washoku**"—harmony in food.

Moreover, these classes often foster a sense of community and connection. You meet fellow food enthusiasts, share a hearty meal together, and sometimes, even make lifelong friends. This communal experience not only enriches your understanding of Japanese culture but allows you to create memorable moments through the act of shared cooking.

Embark on a gastronomic journey with Japanese home cooking classes and return home with new skills, cherished recipes, and an enriched appreciation for this exquisite cuisine.
