Kyushu’s northernmost city of Kitakyushu in Fukuoka is a place to be enjoyed with all the senses. Known for its restored Kokura Castle and its retro port area, this is also where you’ll find a unique food culture developed over centuries. In particular, Kitakyushu is known for making ample use of the fresh seafood supply. Witness the wide variety of high-quality fish available and even learn to cook with it yourself in this experience that involves both a market tour and a sushi-making class.
You’ll begin your adventure at Kokura Station, where you’ll meet your host and head together to the historic Tanga Market. This market street has operated for over 100 years and has over 100 food stalls selling everything from seafood to fresh produce. Your host will guide you through the bustling market, where you can interact with local fishmongers, show you specialties like Kyushu tuna, and explain the cooking methods that make this area truly special.
After your market tour, you’ll arrive at a sushi restaurant called Heishiro for a sushi-making session. An experienced chef will teach you the essential steps to make authentic sushi using ingredients sourced from Kitakyushu. From the rice preparation to how the fish is cut and each piece assembled, discover the keys to delicious sushi. Once the class is over, you’ll enjoy your 12-piece sushi set.
