Experience Details
Step into a village straight out of a fairytale when you visit Gifu Prefecture’s Shirakawa-go! This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known worldwide for its postcard perfect scenery in every season, all thanks to the village’s breathtaking gassho-zukuri thatched-roof buildings. Your guide will explain to you all about why the triangular, thatched roof buildings are called gassho-zukuri, as well as other interesting historical and spiritual tidbits as you explore.
But the roofs aren’t the only special things in Shirakawa-go! The food is also just as amazing. Regional delicacies include Hida Wagyu Beef and a miso paste topped magnolia leaf grilling method known as Hoba Miso - some restaurants even combine the two. Plus, snack vendors along the streets of Shirakawa-go sell anything from dango to pudding to raw beef “niku” sushi and so much more.
